What Causes Excessive Sleepiness While Suffering From Depression And Allergic Rhinitis?

I m sleeping way too much - I know I have depression, hay fever, sinusitis, seasonal allergies, etc. but this is excessive sleeping. I take the kids to school, come back and sleep until time to pick them up, then sleep from 8 or 9 pm until the next morning, although I don t sleep more than an hour or two at a time, I go right back to sleep. Also have had a headache for about two weeks, mostly near my right temple. And yes, muscular problems with my back and neck, seeing a chiropractor as soon as I can stay awake long enough to make an appointment.

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

One possibility would be that of you having sleep apnea. It is common in people with allergies and upper airway issues such as you. They lead to closure of airways during sleep and frequent regular sleep interruptions. As a result while it may seem you sleep too much, your sleep may be of bad quality and you feel sleepy during the rest of the day. A polysomnography is the best test to diagnose sleep apnea. Another possibility if you are under medication would be medication side effects. Some antidepressants may cause somnolence as a side effect. Some medications for allergies may cause somnolence as a side effect as well. So since you have these conditions the current therapy might be reviewed.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
