What Causes Excessive Sleepiness While Suffering From Diabetes And COPD?
My husband (79)is sleeping more and more. Sometimes he will sleep 14-15 hours in a 24 hour period. He is diabetic but under control, has COPD, had congestive heart failure last winter, has had triple by-pass some 15 years ago and an aortic aneurism about 10 years ago. His cardiologist says he is doing fine. I am concerned as he sleeps all night and naps a big part of each day away. Ellyn
Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
In my opinion, thereis no reason to be worried and usually this is just temporary and self limiting. Excessive daytime sleepiness is common issues and should be considered in this case.Excessive daytime sleepiness may be caused by conditions such sleep deprivation, metabolic disturbances, sleep apnoea, medications, neurological disorders such seizures and psychiatric disorders such depression. If emotional causes are ruled out then some tests can be done to confirm the diagnosis. In my opinion, polysomnography ( sleep study ), is one of the necessary examinations in order to achieve a correct diagnosis. Please discuss with primary care Doctor about these issues.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
