What Causes Excessive Sleeping While Suffering From Rheumatoid Arthritis?

My wife is sleeping literally 18 to 20 hours a day. She is 65. She is withdrawn and won t converse with anyone. This has been going on for about 5 weeks. I am worried sick and I do not know what to do. I do not even know what doctor to use. She has a doctor for rheumatoid arthritis but I seem to be unable to get her to a family physician. She has previously been treated for depression in the past and I do not see any abuse of medication (alprazolam or zolpidem). Any advice.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Make sure she is not taking sleeping medications like alprazolam.

Also she needs to do a total blood count. Iron deficiency anemia is possible cause. She needs also to check thyroid hormone levels like T3, T4 and TSH levels because hyperthyroidism may be a cause.

Hope I have answered the question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
