Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have osa and they have me on a cpap.....I snore, quit breathing and have a record number of sleeping interruptions, My concern is the cpap is a rebreather...you breath back most of the air you exhale.... How can this improve the O2 level.... They tell me that s not important and what is important is it puts pressure on the pallet. Not to be missing the boat, but doesn t make sense... Bobby
I will try to explain this to you in a simple way. As the name of your condition suggests, "obstructive sleep apnea" is due to the collapse of your upper airway during sleep. CPAP (continuous positive airway pressure) helps by preventing this collapse from happening by acting as splint across your airway. And you don't rebreathe the same air.
Oxygen flow will wash out the carbon dioxide you breathe out, from the circuit. Now the most important step in the treatment of OSA is weight reduction. Don't hesitate to ask me, if you have any more questions regarding CPAP.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Bright Jebaraj S
