What Causes Excessive Sweating At Night And Hot Flashes?

Hi -- I am 65-year-old woman, very healthy, not overweight, go for a walk every day and work in my garden a lot. I don t smoke, hardly drink, had my last menstrual period 12 years ago. I started sweating excessively at night, and having some hot flashes, in my 40s. Then mostly it stopped. Sometimes I am okay. Most often, though, I wake up all night long SOAKING, DRIPPING wet all over. My doctor thinks its funny.... I take Citalopram for depression, 10 mg. a day; multivitamin, 2000 mg. vitamin D3, and that s all. I drink 2 cups of coffee a day, and no caffeinated sodas. Any ideas??? Thank you!

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

Having new hot flashes, after they resolved after menopause, is not funny to me. I think this needs to be looked into.

For starters, you should have a complete blood count with a differential (CBC with differential) to make sure there is no elevation in white blood count, no anemia.

Also get a thyroid panel (TSH, T4). Hot flashes can be due to many different things including carcinoid syndrome, pheochromocytoma, pancreatic islet-cell tumours, renal cell carcinoma, neurological flushing, flushing reaction related to alcohol and drugs, and flushing associated with food additives.

If it turns out that somehow this is related to post-menopause, the medication clonidine can help. But before jumping to that, an evaluation needs to be done.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
