What Causes Excessive Water Retention In The Body While Treating Hypothyroidism?
my mother is 70 and recently been in the hospital with what they thought was hypothyroidism and during this time her whole body got extremely puffy full of fluid they put her on steroids and her legs started getting puff again she really tired in pain and has diarrhea.
Hello....the puffiness and water retention is probably induced by the steroid medication she is on. Treatment of hypothyroidism per se does not require the use of steroids unless the hypothyroidism itself has been caused by an inflammatory condition of the thyroid known as thyroiditis. Levothyroxine which is used to treat hypothyrpidism does not lead to fluid or water retention. It would be helpful if you could clarify exactly why she was given steroids. Regards,
