Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Excessive Weight Loss Along With Appetite Loss?
My wife has not felt good for a long. She has lost weight, close to 30#. She doesn t have a appetite and the thought of food makes her sick. She nauseated most of the time even though she takes medicine. We thought it was her gallbladder because she has a gallstones. She had a ultrasound and a CT scan on her gallbladder and her liver, kidneys, pancreas, and spleen. It shows the gallstones but is not infected. She is depressed and is taking Zoloft. She is tired and fatigued all the time. We both think there something going on but cannot find anything. She is 73 years old and I am very worried.
I just went through your query. Gallstones itself is not a cause of loss of appetite. It can cause too much of burning sensation or nausea. Loss of appetite in this age is normal but excess loss of weight and appetite other causes should be ruled out. We have to rule out its either physiological or psychological.
1) Zoloft is an SSRI it itself has an anorexic effect and can cause weight loss.
2) Rule out the cause. Does she have any other medical condition like diabetes?
3) Rule out any age-related depression and anxiety.
Speak to a Physician and as well as a psychiatrist too.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Moses John Wesley,
General & Family Physician
