What Causes Excessive Weight Loss And Palpitations While Suffering From Hyperthyroidism?

My friend has been diagnosed with hyperthyroidism (over active thyroid). She has lost 8 pounds in a couple of weeks & has heart palpitations and cannot sleep well. She is a holistic believer and so is juicing all her food, she is a vegan. What general meds from a regular specialist would be good for her? My email is: YYYY@YYYY

The GP would treat her with propylthiouracil or, more likely, methimazole, to interfere with thyroid overactivity. A thyroid scan would likely be performed to look for a nodule and tests for Grave's disease antibodies obtained. Assuming the absence of a tumor, definitive treatment would involve radioactive iodine to eliminate a portion of the thyroid and restore normal thyroid hormone levels.
