What Causes Excruciating Pain In Lower Back?

I am having excruciating pain in my lower back. I don't believe it is a result of lifting or moving incorrectly. I can't recall anything I've done to cause it. The pain is very similar to muscle spasams I had 10+ years ago except that back then the pain came and went on its own. Now it seems to occurr when i move in a certain way, like it was caused from an inujury. It started several weeks ago in my left scapula and corresponding back area of my rib cage. However, now those pains are mostly gone. It has move to my lower back. I went to my GP doctor a week ago thinking it might be a kidney stone but he xrayed me and said he didn't think it was a kidney stone. He gave me a muscle relaxer, but i only tried it once knowong it makes me very drowsy and really didn't do much to relieve the pain. I believe it's a muscle spasam and am trying to find something to relieve the pain.
