What Causes Excruciating Pain In The Ear?

I HAVE excruciating pain in my left ear. It started Thursday, june 23rd. The doctor gave me a steroid shot because I also had a cough and some gurgling in my back left side. She also gave me Lyrica for the ear. By Friday morning, the pain left my ear so I didn t take any more Lyrica. Late this afternoon around 5:30, the pain started in the bone in the face, going up and down but then finally settled in the ear. I ve been sitting with the heating pad on it and it has moved into my should blade but is still in the ear, too. The doctor thought it might be Shingles but could not find any sign of shingles in my hair. I ve had the shingle vaccine. Do you have any idea why this pain in my ear? I am calling my neurologist in the morning but I thought a neurologist could give me some insight on my problem. Thanks but I don t care to pay for the information. I didn t realize that there was a charge. Thank you.

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns. I would like to ask some more questions related to your dizziness like hearing loss or nausea.

If I were your treating Doctor for this case of dizziness with ear pain or heaviness, I would come up with five possibilities, these include:

1. vestibular neuritis

2. Labyrinthitis.

Labyrinthitis and vestibular neuritis are disorders resulting from an infection that inflames the inner ear or the vestibulocochlear nerve, which connects the inner ear to the brain.

3. Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo-( BPPV).-due to debris that has collected within a part of the inner ear.

4. medications-ototoxic drugs-gentamycin, Aspirin.

5. migraine

I suggest you consult ENT surgeon and get detailed ENT examination, otoscopy, balance tests to differentiate between central(brain) or peripheral(inner ear) dizziness, hearing tests(audiometry) to rule out any fluctuating hearing loss.

I advise you to stop driving a two-wheeler, immobilize your self from daily routine activities till you evaluate.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Iven Romic Rommstein, General Surgeon
