What Causes Excruciating Pain When You Touch The Knee After A Fall?

I am a 55 woman and I fell hard onto my right knee about a week ago. The bruising and skin scrape are just about gone but I still have some swelling on the right side of the knee cap and although I have no pain when I walk, I have excruciating pain when you touch it just ever so slightly. Did I tear something or will it just take more time for the inside to heal?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

If the wound is superficial, rest and a cold compress initially followed by a hot compress later will suffice. But if it lasts longer than usual then please do visit a doctor. It could be a tear, it could be skeletal injury, it could be hemarthrosis, anything is possible but requires investigation. For now avoid weight bearing, go about the compress and keep your leg elevated.

Best wishes.
