What Causes Exploding Head Syndrome?

I am 61. I experience Exploding Head Syndrome as a possible description. However, I do not hear this as a loud noise. I hear a knocking at my door, or my phone ringing, or my mother calling my name etc. What is this? I have had these experiences for over 15 years.
