What Causes Extra Skin Growth In The Corner Of The Eye?

Hi. So for the last few weeks my eye has been red and just today I noticed that in the corner of my eyeball, it seems like there is somewhat of extra skin in the corner. When I open my eyelid and look to the right, the skin can be seen pushing out. I also have history with severe allergies due to my asthma.

Hi,

Pinguecula and pterygium are two types of growth, generally in the corners of eye on the conjunctiva of clear white covering of eye (Also called sclera). Pinguecula is a yellowish, raised growth on the corner of eye, usually on the corner near the nose. It may contain deposits of fat, protein and calcium in it. Pterygium is fleshy tissue that grows with blood vessels. It may start as pinguecula and it may remain small or grow to become larger and sometimes even covering some area of cornea, which may affect the vision also.

Most of the times, pinguecula and pterygium do not require any specific treatment except to avoid the eyes from ultraviolet sunlight, from dust and from becoming the eyes dry. Therefore, use of sunglasses and use of tear eye drops may be beneficial & the only required treatment. However, if these growth are presenting with uncomfortable symptoms of pain, redness, irritation of eyes or are affecting the vision, then removal of these growth by an ophthalmologist is indicated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
