Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My wife has end stage liver disease and is on regular doses of lactulose and xfaximin. She has to stay next to the bathroom most of the day because of extremem diarhea. Does that mean the meds are no longer working? She does not seem to have the encehalopathy yet that doctors predict.
Hello, 1) Reason for diarrhea is Lactulose medicine which is being prescribed to prevent encephalopathy 2) But it must be continue to reduce chances of further episodes of encephalopathy. In case of increase frequency of stool (>5) or liquid consistency of stool, dosage of it should be reduced. Semi-solid stool up to 5 time/day is acceptable criterion for dosage of Lactulose
