What Causes Extreme Dryness On The Hand?

About a week ago, my daughters hands suddenly got extremely dry and rough...almost like wind burned. They started cracking and over time, started looking dark like almost bruised. Now, from the base of the fingers to the wrist on one hand is almost turning brown like it is dirty, but it doesn t wash off. This skin is so dry. The other hand is dry as well, but not as dark in color...more chapped looking. Ill just add that she was visiting her grandmother in the hospital a couple of weeks ago and was touching the floor (which I made her get up and go wash her hands...but still...) I have no idea what is going on and can not think of anything she would have put on her hands to cause that reaction (no changes in hand soap, etc). Any thoughts?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
dear HCM user,i understand your daughters problem. She has developed atopic eczema on her hands, may be due to exposure to some irritant chemicals on her hands.Due to which her hands normal barrier got disrupted and leading to eczema. turning brown indicates increased in intensity of the lesion. I advice you to stop repetitively washing her hands with soaps as it will worsen more.
The first step to do is to wash with very mild soap like cetaphil soap and then apply cetaphil moisturising lotion,if not available apply vaseline lotion to her hands.this will help in regenerating the damaged skin and will prevent futher damage.give her chlortrimeton syrup 2.5 ml twice a day or chlorpheniramine maleate syrup total for six days. It will take atleast a week for improvement to take place.
if not improved than consult a dermatologist.
hope that answers the question.
