What Causes Extreme Intolerance To Sound?

My granddaughter is 17 years old and a Sr. in High School. Tonight when we were eating out in a Restaurant, she mentioned a couple of times that she couldn t stand the noise, she couldn t stand the way her little brother was rubbing on a chair. She says she feels this way often. She is a very shy and sweet girl, but had to leave the restaurant early due to what I would call a very small noise with people chatting in the restaurant. What do you think is going on with her?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Noise intolerance has many causes. In young people, stress and depression is a common cause. I just wonder how is her mode recently, of low then probably she has some stress.

Other causes may be related to ear diseases but that's not common in early ages. You can ask her GP to see and ask more if things are not settled.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
