What Causes Extreme Pain In Muscle Next To Shin Bone?

Hello. I have been experiencing extreme pain in the muscle next to my shin bone for some months but for the last two days and nights it's been very painful and comes more frequently. I have taken pain killers but these have no effect. It is not at all like cramp but is a sharp lighting pain that shoots through the muscle. Nothing seems to elevate this until it wears off on its own. Fortunately, it has not happened when walking outside as I have to almost lay down as the pain is very severe. What do you think this could be?

I have read your question, does your pain increase after running or prolonged strenuous activities? As you could be having chronic exersional compartment syndrome of the leg. In this the anterior muscle pain after stressful activities an subsides with rest.
