What Causes Extreme Pain On Both Sides Of The Tongue?
I have extreme pain on one or both sides of my tongue. It appears to occur after eating certain fruits and a few vegetables. It feels like a sore that occurs after i bite my tongue but there is no sore. I gargled with Hydrogen Peroxide and then looked (after rinsing with water) and noticed excessive foaming on two spots near the sides of my tongue but just underneath same. Those areas were also swollen.
Extreme pain on both sides of the tongue is commonly due to injury from a bite, irritation from hot food, irritating dentures & infection, canker sores, oral herpes or cancer.
You are suggested to get clinically examined by an ENT. Get tests done & treated at the earliest. Your treatment will depend on the severity of the pathology detected.
You can take Acetaminophen (Tylenol) to get rid of pain. Local application of Orojel may be effective. Rinse & gargle with salt water 2-3 times daily.
You can take supplements like folic acid, vitamin B6, B12 & zinc. You may need antibiotics.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
Regards,
Dr Nupur K, General & Family Physician
