What Causes Extreme Swelling In The Testicles After Hernia Surgery?
My husband had hernia surgery Monday. He has extreme swelling in his testicles and has not had a bowel movement since Monday. We have been giving him colace since Wednesday and prune juice but nothing is happening. The swelling does not seem to be getting better with cold packs or even warm soaks. He is also urinating about every 1/2 hour(about 1 ounce or so) to relieve pressure that is building up. Any advise?
The swelling is part of the body's inflammatory response to the trauma (surgery). It can take 1 to 2 weeks to resolve in some cases.
Since it is an inflammatory response, you may want to consider using an anti inflammatory medication even if he is not having any significant pain eg voltaren, ibuprofen, naproxen.
The cold soaks would be better than the warm soaks because warmth would increase the blood supply to the area and this can potentially increase swelling.
In addition, he should try, if possible, to elevate the lower body . This would help to reduce the swelling as well. Continue using fluids and fiber (can add a fiber supplement such as metamucil or cetrucil or benefiber) to help with the constipation.
I hope this helps
