What Causes Extreme Tightness, Swelling And Numbness In Arms While Treating Hidradenitis?

Two weeks ago I had bilateral underarm surgery due to hydradenitis. Although surgery isn t a guarantee that these harmful boils that I had won t returned, I felt relieved to know that the problem was fixed currently. However, if I had to do it again, I probably wouldn t. Why? The recovery process is terrible!! I m experiencing extreme tightness, swelling and numbness and feeling that my circulation in both arms is cut off (SX increase while lying down)... I can t sleep and the pain level is a 9 but decreases to about a 4 during the day when I m standing or just up and moving. I m worried about my current symtoms as they are worse than having to deal with those nasty boils before surgery. I m scared I won t regain feeling or overall things doesn t get any better but get worse. I m taking ATB (doxycycline and cephalexin) and pain meds faithfully. Should I continue to worry? Is this expected to happen or normal? Please advise, Thank you, Terri L.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

You are suffering from extreme tightness, swelling, numbness in the arms after bilateral underarm surgery for hidradenitis. Sores and scar tissue can cause limited or painful movement in the arms. Scar tissue can interfere with the lymph drainage system, which can result in swelling in the arms and trigger pain.

It can also be caused due to extensive resection during surgery using skin flaps or skin grafts as a closure method. It can be associated with a higher incidence of complications. Careful consideration of the use of extensive resection or using skin flaps or skin grafts as a closure method can minimize the risk of complications post surgery.

Daily antiseptic wash to cleanse affected area may help, it can be done by a health care provider. Ointments and creams containing vitamin A can help to reduce inflammation. Ice packs or warm compresses and lidocaine skin cream or ointment may be helpful.

Over-the-counter or prescription pain medications are helpful, do continue to take the medicines. Get a follow up clinical examination done by your treating surgeon, so that complication can be treated. He may refer you to pain management specialist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
