What Causes Extremely Increased Sleep Timing At The Age Of 72?

My dad is 72 years old, has had many heart issues over the years. Until last week, he was playing golf 5 days a week. This week, he has played golf once and sleeping nearly 18 hrs. a day. Speech is fine and no signs of stroke, heart rate, BP and other functions appear normal. The sudden change is what has my family concerned. Thanks so much! JD

General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI....
Thank you for your post.
I can understand your concern. Your fathers behavior is probably not because of his previous heart issues. As long as he is sleeping without any complaints, there is probably nothing to be worried about. Please don't be alarmed just because he skipped his golf. I would advice him to undergo regular health checkup because of his previous history.
As long as he is undergoing regular cardiac checkup, you have nothing to be worried about.
Hope i have cleared your doubts.
Thank you.
