Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I ve had irregular periods since I first started when I was twelve years old. I m thirty two now and nothings changed...I ve never been able to get an answer from my doctors to what could make me miss my periods anywhere from one month to six months... Six months is the longest I ve gone without having a period, can you tell me what the problem could be please?
Delayed periods can be due to different possible causes. The most common reasons are:
(1) PCOS- polycystic ovarian syndrome. An ultrasound and blood tests are needed to determine if this is present
(2) emotional stress or illness
(3) physical illness
(4) thyroid disease
(5) high levels of a hormone called prolactin
(6) inadequate diet
(7) excess activity
Blood tests would help determine if any of these are present.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Michelle Gibson James, General & Family Physician
