Whenever I drink alcohol, I am told I fart in my sleep (whereas I don't when I do not drink alcohol). Why does this happen? and how can I stop it from happening? I'm a 29yr old female. I eat relatively healthy food and exercise approx 5 days per week.
Don't drink or find out how long a time you have to wait after drinking before you can sleep without problems. There are several reasons why this can happen. Farting obviously occurs from air in the bowel. This is normally present and everyone farts somewhat. More occurs with more air. Some starches are not absorbed well and are broken down by bacteria. Alcohol is absorbed very well, so that is unlikely BUT some plant sugars (grape JUICE for me) are broken down by some people's bacteria... differs with the alcohol, most do not have sugar. Then alcohol can stimulate both the gut and swallowing air, and this is likely the cause and no alcohol with dinner or after will likely fix it.
