What Causes Fatigue And High BP While Suffering From Hyperthyroidism?

Hi Im Rajit (Male) 38 yrs. I was initially diagnosed Hyperthyroid TSH 0.07 iu in 2015 and was asked to take med mercazole 5mg for 15 days. But by the 9th day I had my blood checked TSH was 150iu Hypo.. Initially I was on med dosage 50mcg per day. At present Im on 100 mcg since my TSH went upto 37iu six months ago. But now when tested my blood TSH .02iu. I feel somewhat tired and my Blood Pressure 140/90. Kindly advice if I would have to reduce my medicine dosage. Also I would like to inform you that upon scanning early this year, I think March 2017 a nodule very small was noticed on the left part of the thyroid gland. Then again upon scanning the second time in August2017 when my TSH was 37 ui (I was on 50mcg at that time) The nodule could not be seen. The Surgeon advised me to increase the dose to 100 mcg and do the thyroid test next month i.e. September 2017 and undergo operation, Which I did nt do. Since then I was on 100 mcg till now. I have reduced the dosage from 100mcg to 75 mcg since today morning. I hope my TSH woul nt go beyond the limit during the 4 weeks time, B coz I already suffered a lot when my TSH was 150 mcg.

Hello,

Hyperthyroidism is commonly associated with an increased Blood pressure (BP) and fatigue. Fluctuating TSH levels should be maintained by altering the dosage of your anti-thyroid drugs.

You do not need to be concerned about the nodule on the thyroid. It is probably a functional nodule that is partly the cause of the hyperthyroidism. You could consider undergoing radio-ablation therapy for the thyroid.

Side effects will include needing thyroxine supplementation lifelong. You can additionally ask your surgeon to prescribe a beta blocker to help with the high BP.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pranav Balakrishnan
