Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Fatigue, Itching And Chills All Over The Body?
I m a male who recently performed oral sex on another male. It was very brief and there was no ejaculation. There was also a brief kiss with possible saliva exposure. Two weeks later I ve experienced some flu like symptoms that have decreased, including fatigue, itching, chills, aches and pains. I went to the doctor but there was not signs of swelling in the glands, rashes or other STDs. I also had some Levofloxacin and Doxycycline Mono that I took as a precaution. I noticed what might be a small rash on my left cheek but could also be a razor burn. I wondering if the medicine or stress is causing these symptoms and/or what other viruses or contagious diseases might cause these symptoms? Also I ve read the risk for HIV is very low with oral sex without ejaculation. If the symptoms do not go away I plan on getting tested soon but not sure the results will be accurate - any advice is appreciated...
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
The Acute HIV Syndrome occurs 3–6 weeks after primary infection and symptoms are fever, skin rash, pharyngitis, and myalgia;symptoms usually persist for one to several weeks and gradually subside . The syndrome is typical of an acute viral syndrome. In your case flu-like symptoms started two weeks after an oral sex.Although HIV can be isolated typically in low titers from saliva of a small proportion of infected individuals, there is no convincing evidence that saliva can transmit HIV infection, either through kissing or through other exposures.Hence risk for HIV is very low with oral sex without ejaculation. The symptoms appear to be of viral infection but unlikely to be due to HIV infection.Acute viral syndrome in your case can be due to acute infectious mononucleosis, caused by .Epstein–Barr virus(EBV).It is generally a self-limiting disease, and little treatment is normally required. You can undergo monospot test for heterophile antibodies for EBV. If negative go for the standard blood screening test for HIV infection ( ELISA), also referred to as an enzyme immunoassay (EIA) after 12 weeks..
