What Causes Feeling Of Food Struck In The Throat?

Hi, I have had some trouble swallowing for about 2 weeks now. It comes and goes and eating food or drink doesn t bother at all. Just at times it feels like a piece of food stuck in my throat and hard to swallow. I have a couple tiny little ulcers on the back of my throat which I think could be to blame but not sure. My throat is not sore. I seen my doctor a few months ago with a sore throat and had a few ulcers then and he figured it was viral and didn t prescribe anything. They did go away but now I m having issues again. I ve tried gargling with salt water and honey which helps but doesn t seem to make it go away. Any ideas?

Hello and welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You are having difficulty in swallowing and having past history of ulcers in throat. Hence pharyngitis, pharyngeal ulcers, post nasal drip, enlarged tonsil etc has to be ruled out first. If ulcers are found then multivitamin tablets are prescribed for that. If pharyngitis is present then betadine gargle might be prescribed.

Spicy foods are restricted. If acidity is present then for that pantoprazole like antacid is prescribed. If still no cause is evident after examination, then neurological examination is done and endoscopy might be needed for further work up. Take care and consult a physician for examination.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Parth Goswami
