What Causes Feeling Of Lump In Throat?

Sore throat started on Mon, worse at night. Last night, Tues it woke me up hurting - not exactly like a sore throat. Feels like a lump in my throat but only hurts when I swallow. Just a sore throat/cold/flu? How do I know if it's something more serious?
