What Causes Fever Along With Sore Throat And Swollen Lymph Nodes?
My 18 yr old son home from college for the holidays developed a fever and possible flu for 2 days, felt better for 4 days, then developed a painful sore throat, painful swollen lymph node and a rash. He was diagnosed 3 days later with strep throat and prescribed penicillin. This was 7 days ago. He feels better but has lost his appetite and is tired all the time. Could he have mononucleosis or a side effect from strep throat? He is supposed to go back to college out of tow tomorrow. What do you recommend?
Since your son has already been diagnosed with streptococcal infection and taken treatment for the same I don't think there is anything to worry about. It is normal to loose appetite after such an episode. He will regain his appetite slowly as he recovers. I don't think he has mononucleosis as the doctor would have diagnosed it on examination. It is diagnosed with the help of the Monospot test which looks for EBV specific antibodies in the blood. Even if he had mononucleosis there is no specific treatment for it and only symptomatic treatment is given. Tell him to stay hydrated by drinking lots of water.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
