What Causes Fever Along With Strain In The Back Above The Rib Cage?

I have been running a fever (off and on) of 100.4 to 101.3 for several days. I started out several weeks ago feeling some sort of strain along my back, over my right ribcage. I though I had strained something working out. Then last Saturday I noticed a feeling of heaviness in my right lung, restricted breathing (somewhat) and then (in order) the next evening I experienced chills, the next afternoon I started coughing (Monday) and the feeling of heaviness increased to the point where I had trouble sleeping. The next day, this last Tuesday, I lost my voice and my temp rose to over 100. I saw a doctor, not my usual one, who said my lungs sounds clear and that it was probably a strain combined with some sort of virus. My right lung does seem to have cleared, but my temp keeps going up and down and I seem to be having irregular heartbeats, not all the time, but off and on, or the beats feel more pronounced. the coughing is still present and I am very tired. BP is acceptable, usually 100 over 60-something, although when I checked it yesterday it was 122/76, which is high for me. Sooooo, what do you think? A virus???

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

* I suspect an issue with underlying inflammation of rib or cartilage as costochondritis or others because fever with record reading of 100.4 to 101.3 is not normal.

* Inflammatory mediators as Interleukins and other pyrogens are responsible for such presentation and underlying cause evaluation with CT scan is best recommended provided x-ray chest is normal.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr Bhagyesh V. Patel, General Surgeon
