What Causes Fever Along With Vomiting In A Child?

Hello doctor..
My son is 7years old.He has fever, vomiting and motions from last week.Doctor asked to do blood test.saw the result and gave monocef tablet and said it is an antibiotic.she asked to take blood test again after 2 days to check if the medicine is working. This is third day and presently he is not having fever or vomiting or motion from yesterday. Is it necessary to take blood test again now to check if the medicine is working? Or shall i wait till his antibiotic course is completeand then go for blood test?
He is not having fever does that mean his infection has reduced and medication is working??

Please suggest me
Thank you.

Thanks for raising your concern on this platform and after reviewing your case history I'm of the following opinion:

1. Fevers are usually caused by bacterial or viral infection but since he also had vomiting and motions it could be possible food poisoning [gastroenteritis] but another condition to rule out is Meningitis [infection of brain and spinal cord] which can cause fever and vomiting in child thus take an opinion of Medicine Specialist/Neurologist to exclude the same.

2. Monocef [cefpodoxime] is a third generation cephalosporin antibiotic indicated for respiratory/urinary tract/skin infection so could be the reason of giving the same but ADR [adverse drug reaction] of the drug itself is nausea/vomiting/diarrhea so keep in mind the same

3. As you said that symptoms are reduced after taking the medicine, do continue the regime but if the condition of your son deteriorates or worsen then check for re-evaluation since taking antibiotics for longer may contribute to antibiotic resistance [reason for checking the blood test again after 2 days]

4. giving antibiotic along with paracetamol helps in controlling infection and bringing down the temperature, so initially it can be said that the medicine has controlled the infection but since fever helps the body immune system to fight infection, there is no need to bring the temperature back to normal [unless your doctor recommends], till then

- adequate bed rest
- semi solid or liquid diet
- plain water, lime water, coconut water or electral water
- soft rice with milk, palin daal, boiled vegetables, toast jam, cornflakes, apple, banana, pear, watermelon, biscuits
