What Causes Fever And An Enlarged Liver In A Child?

hi my daughter became ill around august 7th with genefrally not feeling well, some fever etc. On monday I took her to the md and they said a virus. On Friday I took her back and they said positive mono test capillary test. By Monday evening temperatures were worse and coughing and chills. On Tuesday I took her back and the MD said pneumonia and sent for chest xray to verify. Wednesday she couldn t get up, vomiting etc took her to ER and she was admitted for 5 days with bacterial pneumonia. The Dr. at the children s hospital er insisted that she did not have mono. She has been home from the hospital almost five days now with very little improvement in her energy level and fatigue. Having some joint pain in her shoulder. Her pediatrician still insists that she probably has mono. I m not sure which dr to believe and we are afraid they may be missing something els. She also has a slightly enlarged liver with tenderness and history of tender spleen.

Pediatrician 's  Response
Hi,

As per the history that you have told, it seems like as a mother you have a suffered a lot, so before starting the discussion, i hope for a speedy recovery of your daughter. There can be a lot of reasons for Pneumonia and what seems like is that she had pneumonia which is unrelated to Mono.

Pneumonia as a complication of mono is a little rare. What I would suggest is to go with he prescribed medicines and lots of rest for recovery. A good follow up system is a must. Also, if you have doubts you can ask your health care provider for definite test for mono. That will be able to alleviate any anxiety related to that.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Gaurav Nigam, Pediatrician
