What Causes Fever And Joint Pain When Diagnosed With Elevated CRP Levels?

My son is 7 years old and has had a previous positive ANA test that by the time we got to a specialist was dismissed. However he has frequent fevers with no other issue other than his joints/body hurts. His last flare up his fever was 101 and he could not walk for 4 days. His blood work came back with elevated crp levels. I am on a waiting list for a Rheumatoid, however they cannot see him until February. I am looking to go ahead and make lifestyle changes that can help relieve his pain through diet and exercise, but am unsure of a direction. Would hot swollen joints indicate a particular type of juvenile arthritis?

Hi & Welcome.

I appreciate your concern for your beloved son and sorry to know about his suffering.

Based upon the history given and the lab tests he seems to be suffering from some sort of inflammatory arthritis like juvenile rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.

The presence of these antibodies (ANA) and an elevated CRP level is common in lupus and other autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis.

He should be properly evaluated by rheumatologist for the exact diagnosis and treatment thereafter.

Meanwhile, the following lifestyle changes may help your child like:

1. He should have an adequate sleep for at least 8 hours, establish a sleep schedule like every day, he should go to the bed and wake up at the same time.
2. He should be given healthy and nutritious diet such as fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. Try adding foods that contain omega-3s, such as salmon and olive oil. These foods have an anti-inflammatory effect-eating them can lower overall inflammation levels in your body.

3. Also, try to limit highly processed foods and fast foods since these foods can aggravate rheumatoid arthritis symptoms.

3. Regular, low-impact exercise is to be encouraged.

Hope the advice given above would be useful to your son.
