What Causes Fever And Pain In The Upper Abdomen?

On the airplane ride home from a vacation in spain I got a fever. It went up to 101.4. I have pain in my upper abdomen and my hands are very shaky. Food sounds terrible and I have been a bit nauseated and also had a little diarrhea. Do I need to be seen by a travel dr. or any dr. at all?

Hi,

With the history of pain in the upper abdomen, nausea, shaky hands, fever and bad taste in the mouth you need to see a Doctor.

All these symptoms may be due to one of the following reasons:
-Traveler's diarrhea.
-Hepatitis.
-Colitis.

Hence, there is a need for clinical evaluation, an actual physical examination and relevant investigations like:
-Blood for CBC, liver functions and as needed.
-Tests of stool and urine.
-Other investigations as per the clinical presentation found by the Doctor.

All these things will lead to a correct diagnosis so that an appropriate management can be done as you are traveling.

Till then take oral rehydration solution, symptomatic treatment like Paracetamol for fever, Domperidone and a PPI like Omeprazole for nausea.

Take plenty of oral fluids. Make sure to stabilize the condition before you travel.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T Chandrakant,
