What Causes Fever, Headache And Elevated Pulse Rate?

Hi - My wife is 65 YO female. Active and in great health. Starting about 2 days ago she started getting a headache accompanied by a fever of between 101 and 103. She has not had a fever in years. She has taken in lots of water and her pulse is elevated. She is resting now and has slept through the night the last two nights with no difficulty. She does not have cramps, flu symptoms or nausea. The fever is my big concern. We have access to an acute clare clinic at Madigan Hospital tomorrow morning at 07:30 - can I wait that long.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello!

I can understand your concern!

I would advise the patient:

1. Please take Paracetamol 500 mg to control the fever.

2. Pulse is elevated in fever. Please do not worry.

3. It is good that she is taking water. That will maintain her hydration.

4. Please keep a track of her fever. Give her a Paracetamol, you may try 650 mg also, if it is reaching 100. You may try cold sponging to reduce it.

5. Paracetamol can be given 8 hourly to control fever.

6. If the fever is in this range, you may wait till tomorrow.

7. If the fever is exceeding 103, or not controlled by Paracetamol, please call the hospital for help.

Wish her a speedy recovery.
