What Causes Fever In A Child Even After Taking Antibiotics?

my 6 year old son woke up with a fever of 104.6 thursday morning about 2am. My husband took him to the doc Thursday afternoon, they took blood and said his has a bacteria infection and gave him Cephalexin. His first dose of that was about three Thursday afternoon and he takes it evey 8 hours. Well it is saturday night and he still has a very high fever he woke up from sleeping this afternoon with a fever of 105.3 I can get it down to about 101 with tylenol but it just comes back in hours. And I also notice today his tonsils are very swollen. So I'm wondering should I be taking him back to the doc sence his fever still won't go away or does it just take this long for antibiotics to kick in?

Hi...Thank you for consulting in Health Care magic.

Fever of three days without any localizing signs or danger signs could as well a viral illness. Usually rather than fever, what is more important is the activity of the child, in between 2 fever episodes on the same day. If he is active and playing around when there is no fever, it is probably and it doesn't require antibiotics at all. Day 1 of fever doing blood tests is also not advisable and that too for a 6 year old, it will not guide you anywhere. Without doing a blood culture who's results will be available only after 5 days, no body can it si bacterial.

Once viral fever comes it will there for 4-7 days. So do not worry about duration if the kid is active. You can treat fever with Paracetamol at 15mg/kg/dose every 4-6th hourly, that too if fever is > 100F.
