What Causes Fever, Loss Of Appetite, Chills And Weakness In A Child?
My 6 year old has had a fever ranging from 99 to 103 for the last 5 days. She is weak, loss of appetite. She is unstable when standing and needs help. Is walking very slow with a limp. She was seen at her doctors two days ago and said it was a viral gastro and that it will pass. Nothing is getting better she is getting worse. Her color also changes in her face and she has the chills. She was tested for strep and that came back negative.
You need to get her to a doctor as soon as possible. Regardless of what type of infection it is, when a child is so weak that she can't walk and play normally, then she definitely needs to be reassessed again and possibly admitted for monitoring.
Children can get dehydrated very easily even with a normal fever, and after 5 days, other things like dengue needs to be considered as well. A negative strep test rules out just that - strep. There are many more bacterial and viral infections that can make her ill, and she needs to be thoroughly checked again to see if any other signs have developed.
Don't wait any more, get her to a hospital today.
Hope this helps, and all the best to you.
Regards Dr. Teh
