What Causes Fever, Low WBC And Sodium Levels In Blood Post An Injury?
33 year old with fever up to 102 and 103 for 5 days. Chest X-ray normal. Lab work normal except for slightly lower wbc and low sodium. No other symptoms. Was seen in emergency room wed. Dislocated and fractured ankle. Put surg on hold for 1 week. What can this be
Fever is part of the body's inflammatory response to pain, infection, trauma or allergy.
It is possible that the fracture is contributing to the fever but it would not normally send the temperature this high so the underlying infection may need to be ruled out.
In light of his history of trauma and fracture, in addition to the chest x-ray and complete blood count, a blood culture may be needed as part of his assessment.
