What Causes Flaking And Peeling Skin Underneath A Cast?
I m almost six weeks post pilon fracture of the left leg and a milder fracture on the right foot. I m noticing peeling and flakiness which is rather much it seems on the right foot and especially on the left which I can see underneath the cast. I had an external fixator for the first 5 weeks. What would cause this flaking and peeling of the skin?
skin cells go on regenerating daily and keratin is repleneshed as they divide, thats how all keratin in our body regenerated . the keratin that is lost daily goes off into atmosphere. when you are in circular cast this keratin gets accumulated in the space between cast and leg and it stays there, and most probably what you are seeing peeling of skin is excess keratin that is not washed off.
