General & Family Physician 's  Response
There can be multiple causes of fluid around the lung. The collection is called pleural effusion and may be caused by-
-Infection of lung like Pneumonia, pneumonitis
-Cardiac failure
-Hepatic failure
-Renal Failure
-Aspiration
-Pulmonary hypertension
-Septicemia
-Lung Tumor
Treatment depends on the underlying cause. Diuretics are given to remove the fluids via urine. A pleural tap (removal of fluid by pulling out using a needle and syringe) may be required in case of large collection.

Hope this answers your question, thank you.
