What Causes Fluid Build Up Against The Eardrum And Pain In Both Ears?

Over the past three months, I have experienced a sinus infection. The doctor has treated me with three different kinds of antibiotics and steroids each time. Each time, the doctor said that I had a lot of fluid build up pressing against my eardrum, but no infection. I continue to have sharp pains shoot through both ears and I have been off all medicines for about three weeks. I am not sure what is causing so much ear pain. Any thoughts? I have asked the doctor to refer me to an ear, nose and throat specialist.

Hello,

It could be due to a peculiar condition called serous otitis.

As a first line management, you can try antihistamines like cetirizine for symptomatic relief.

If symptoms persist better to consult an ENT specialist and get evaluated.

If symptoms persist you have to drain the fluid.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain,
