What Causes Fluid Leakage From Draining Tube In Stomach While Treating Cirrhosis?

my dad has cerosis of the liver, and consistantly has to have his stomach drained of fluid. Today, his incision to the draining tube, started leaking a clear liquid.. exiting from the lacarasion sight in very small, but continuous drops.. in about 2 hours he has soked a normal size wash rag with this fluid.. like i mentioned, the fluid is a clear substance and also, this does not cause him pain. What is this and is this something we should be concerned about or even go to the nearest E.R. ? Or is this a normal post procedure result? can u please educate us on this matter..ty

Hello,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
In patients with liver cirrhosis there is accumulation of fluid in abdominal free space which we call as ascitis.
This csn be present from few ml to litres.
If it increase too much we do procedure called as paracentesis where we put needle in abdomen and drain the fluid so as the patient is comfortable as it causes breathing difficulty or other problems due to distended abdomen.
As the draining tube is lying itself in the fluid and as the distensioncomes down the incision site becomes loose and hence the fluid starts seeping from side of tube.
Only thing you can do for this is to put tight plaster around the tube base so fluid doesn't seep out from sides which is causing this inconvenience.
Or let the fluid come out as much as possible once it goes very low level it will stop automatically. But the problem is it will again fill up slowly with time. Consult your doctor who has put this tube and ask for securing the port tightly so it doesn't leak from sides.
I hope i have answered your query well.
Thank you
