What Causes Fluid Retention In Legs?

What could possibly cause fluid retention in my legs? Started about 3 weeks ago in calf, seems to be in both legs now. Added 1 - 2 liters of water to my diet recently to replace diet drink. 47yr old female, walks 6 miles a day, non smoker. Otherwise in great health, good weight with a BMI of 21.

Hi,

Fluid retention in the legs, also known as edema, can be caused by various factors. Some common causes include:
* Venous insufficiency, which occurs when the valves in the veins that usually prevent blood from flowing backward become damaged, allowing blood to pool in the legs
* Heart failure, which can cause fluid to build up in the legs as the heart struggles to pump blood effectively

Certain medications, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, birth control pills, and some antidepressants. Pregnancy can cause fluid retention due to the added pressure on the veins in the legs. Standing or sitting for long periods can cause blood to pool in the legs. Certain medical conditions include kidney disease, liver disease, and lymphatic obstruction.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hi,

It still needs these investigations ECG, renal function tests, LFT. It might also be due to more salt intake. Well, is it while sitting, standing or taken pregnancy pill, BP meds, steroids, anti-depressants etc.? if these few tests are normal then it might be physiological. Learn yoga or breathing exercises. They help in many causes as shown in a few researches.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
