Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My father has to have fluid taken from his lower abdomen. The Dr. Said it is most likely from hearth disease. They are going to do a ultra sound then use a needle to draw the fluid off. He is 87 years old are they going to put him to sleep to do this?
As per my clinical experience, the fluid in the lower abdomen can be from various issues as:
- Abdomen infection or other pathology
- Liver problems
- Protein metabolism derangement
- Reactionary collection secondary to venous return issues
- Other
I would like to consult further with the reports available. For the needle drawing fluid, he will not go under complete anesthesia, rather than he is being given only supportive analgesics to ease the associated pain with the procedure.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Purva Patel,
