Hi,

Can you mention the mode of treatment received- chemo / radiation / surgery?

This can happen by two mechanisms:
1. Although rarely, tissue disruption from radiation / surgery, or the cancer itself causing abnormal communication between esophagus and wind pipe (tracheo-esophageal fistula)
2. Dysfunction of epiglottis / pharyngeal muscles from effect of radiation

Treatment depends on the cause, which we have to evaluate. Kindly discuss with your doctor. You may be asked for barium swallow study.

Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Muhammed Aslam T. K., Pediatrician
