What Causes Food To Get Stuck In The Throat?

I am a 56 year old male smoker. While eating steak, sometimes a piece of the meat will lodge in my throat. I am still able to breath, without difficulty, but it can take several minutes for the food particle to work it s way down my throat, or the system will cause me to expel the lodged meat. This has happened 4 or 5 times over a several year period. Only occurs with meat and I have to be cautious. I have noticed that if I start with very small cuttings gradually it feels as if the throat relaxes/expands enough so as not be an issue. Is there something to be concerned about?

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

You need a upper gastrointestinal evaluation with endoscopy followed by any imaging modality if endoscopy reveals any issue.
