Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Forceful Cough And Difficulty In Swallowing When Diagnosed With GERD?
I have had forceful cough for two months. Non productive, worsened by a lot of talking. Pain on the right side front of my neck. Last year, I saw my PC after difficulty swallowing for 4 months. I had an ultra sound and upper gi. The ultrasound was negative. The upper gi showed a hiatal hernia and GERD. I take 40 mg of omeprazole daily. I m not sure if I should return to my PC?
Hello! Thanks for putting your query in HCM. I am a Gastroenterologist.
Both forceful cough and dysphagia can be due to GERD and hiatus hernia. Continous reflux can cause stricture in oesophagus leading to dysphagia. GERD and Hiatus hernia itself can cause dysphagia. So I will suggest you to get endoscopy examination.
Meanwhile I will like to advise you: 1.to avoid tea, coffee, oily and spicy food. 2.Also avoid citrus fruits. 3.Among medications take a proton pump inhibitor like rabeprazole and a prokinetic agent like domperidone. 4.Dont lie down at least for 2 hrs after any meal and 5. Dont drink water for at least 2 hrs with any meal. I hope I have answered your query and this will help you . Wish you a good health
