What Causes Foul Smell In The Nose Post A Sinus Surgery?
Hi, I have recently has sinus surgery. Since the surgery I have been using all the relevant sprays, flushes and tablets. However recently I have noticed a foul smell from my nose. Like stagnant water and often I can taste it. Also I have been blowing my nose and I ve been finding large black, bloody snot balls. They are irritating. What could be the problem?
Well this not an uncommon thing to have fouls smell and bad taste after the sinus surgery . There can be many reasons for this .
It takes 5-6 month for healing after surgery and 3-4 months to retain its normal functions.
Nasal irrigation and saline nasal spray play important role during this period , which prevent the recurring of infection and bad taste and foul smell.
Sometimes biofilm formation can cause such problems .
As long as you do not get fever it is totally normal .
If foul smell persist for longer time , get worse or there is fever then consult your ENT surgeon (ear, nose ,throat) for proper examination .
Doctor may perform endoscopic examination to check whats wrong.
Wishing you a good health. Thank you Dr Harry Maheshwari
