General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,
I read your concern.

There may be many causes of foul smelling urine.
1. Dehydration: with dehydration, the urine is more concentrated and may have a stronger ammonia scent than normal.
2. Consumption of certain foods, such as asparagus , which can impart odor to urine should be looked out for.
3. Urinary tract infection: Presence of bacteria in urine as in UTI, can affect the appearance and smell of urine . Bacteria may lead to foul-smell of urine.
4. Genetic disorders: Certain genetic disorders such as maple syrup urine disease lead to typical foul smell of urine.
5. Diabetes: In uncontrolled diabetes, urine has an abnormally sweet odor.
To avoid foul smell of urine, ckeck yourself for these conditions .
Drink a lot of water daily to prevent concentration of urine. Avoid foods which lead to odor in urine.Get a routine examination of urine done to rule out UTI. Get your sugar level tested to rule out Diabetes.

You can discuss and get a second opinion with your urologist keeeping in mind the above points as well.
I would appreciate if you could revert back mentioning your age , sex and marital status as well.

Hope this helps,
Regards,
