What Causes Freckles And Dark Discolouration On Left Cheek?

Hi,At February time this year I developed a freckle on my left cheek which was getting bigger and a bit darker until now.I obviously was worried about so I went to see a doctor. She said it was from the sun as I have used sunbeds in the past and I like to sit in the sun. However, I don't like this freckle and I'm worried exposure to sunlight will make it even darker and bigger. Is there anything which I can do to remove/ lighten it?

Hello and Welcome to Healthcaremagic.

I will try to the best of my ability to help you with your concern.

The freckles occur due to multiple exposure to sun light . Basically freckles are caused by ultra violet radiation of the sun . UV radiation of sun tan the skin into dark circular spots .

I would suggest you to :-

- Avoid sun exposure because sun can further worsen the condition by triggering the melanocytes to produce more melanin (pigment responsible for dark spots ) .

- Apply sunscreen with SPF 50 whenever you go outside .

- Wash your face twice daily with mild soap and cold water .

- Exfoliate your skin once a week to remove dead skin.

- Apply kojic acid cream twice a day for month .

If spots doesn't go away in a month the consult dermatologist for proper evaluation .

Doctor may prescribe hydroquinone , retinoid or tertenoin cream .

Doctor may also recommend procedure like laser therapy and chemical peeling.
