What Causes Frequent Chest Pains And Coughing Up Blood While On Amiodarone?

My 93-year old father had a mild heart attack in June and had 2 stents put in his heart arteries. He is on Amiodarone 200mg 1/day. (He was on it 2x/day for 21 days). It can have serious side effects -he did have one episode of chest pains and coughing up blood. Does this need to be a long-term drug, or could he maybe be off it before long? Thank you.

Hi.

Amiodarone does have some serious adverse effects, but it is thus used only in serious or lofe-threatening situations like your fathers. The amiodarone will continue as long as the heart cannot go about its own pumping ot rhythm. So I cannot really answer your question on how long this drug will be used or may have to be used, but I just hope for his health to improve soon. please understand that amiodarone is used only when the side effects it brings along with it is better than death of that individual.
